Christian right is a term used in the United States to describe right-wing Christian political groups that are characterized by their strong support of socially conservative policies. Christian conservatives principally seek to apply the teachings of Christianity to politics public policy by proclaiming the value of those teachings and/or by seeking to use those teachings to influence law and public policy. In the U.S., the Christian right is an informal coalition of numerous groups, chiefly evangelicals, (especially Southern Baptists) and Catholics. Into the 1960 election, Catholics and evangelicals were at sword's point, as evangelicals mobilized their forces to defeat Catholics Al Smith in 1928 and John F. Kennedy in 1960. By the 1980s, however, Catholic bishops and evangelicals worked together on issues such as abortion. The Christian right is strongest in the South, where it comprises the core of the Republican Party. Besides conservative positions on domestic issues such as opposition to abortion and same-sex marriage, most of the Christian right is a strong supporter of Israel in foreign affairs. There are similar, smaller Christian right movements in other countries, including Canada, Australia, and the Philippines. From Wikipedia under the
